After we got home from our adventures for the day, we decided to walk Poipu Beach- that's the beach our hotel sits on. It was a nice walk. We saw some neat things. Here is a cute little sand crab. It's about as big as a normal Utah sized spider. So cute!
I love the patterns that nature makes. The waves repeatedly coming up on shore created this pattern. Isn't is so cool!
This is a Hawaiian Monk Seal. She was just sleeping on the beach down from our hotel. There is often a seal there. They rope an area off to protect the seals. This one had been there most of the day. She was pretty neat to see and watch for a min. She kind of reminded me of my kids. I think she got sick of me taking pictures of her so she buried her head in the sand. I guess her flippers couldn't reach up well enough- or she was just too tired to use them to cover her face like my kids do when they get sick of me taking their pictures. There was a retired vet who now works with the seals there standing guard. She's the one who told us this is a girl. She said that she is easy to recognise because she has some distinguishing scars. Around her neck is a "necklace" looking scar. When she was young she got stuck in a net. These seals are the most endangered animal on the earth. There are about 30 around the islands and only about 1,200 left in the world. The big problem now for them is finding enough food. The older seals are doing ok, but the young ones are having a harder time finding enough food to survive. Sad. But so neat that we got to see one so close. The seal we saw yesterday was this same kind.
Well, here is my sunset shot for tonight! I can't believe another day is done. Tomorrow is our last full day here. Maybe one day we'll have to bring the kids. No, that's not a promise- just a maybe! This is a remarkable place.
